Peshawar High Court restores electoral symbol for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan.

Story

STORY: The Peshawar High Court on Wednesday (January 10) restored electoral symbol for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan, a PTI lawyer said.

In a major relief, PTI can now contest election on "bat" electoral symbol.

Pakistan’s national election is scheduled for February 8, 2024.

The electoral body last month declared that PTI intra-party elections in December were void. The party had needed to hold those elections in order to retain the symbol. The PTI challenged that decision in court.

The court had reserved the verdict on the PTI’s petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision revoking the party’s ‘bat’ electoral symbol and declaring its intra-party polls “unconstitutional”.

“The Peshawar High Court, while maintaining its tradition of decide according to the spirit of justice, announced today that the bat symbol which Election Commission of Pakistan had taken away from PTI forcibly by an illegal order null and void and said that the bat symbol should be given to PTI with immediate effect,”lawyer Ali Zafar told reporters in Peshawar.

The court directed the PTI to publish the certificate filed by the PTI following internal polls on its website, he added.

He lamented that the ECP had become an opponent of the PTI but asserted that the party was ready to face whatever may come.

The senator further stated that if the ECP failed to restore the ‘bat’ symbol on its website in 15 minutes, then it would amount to contempt of court.
