Story

Hundreds of Pakistanis on Sunday (November 26) demonstrated in Pakistan’s second biggest city Lahore to express solidarity with Palestinian people in Gaza.

Men, women and children, carrying Palestinian flags, chanted slogans against Israel and America in a rally called “Freedom of Palestine March” and staged by the Shi'ite political group Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) a Pakistani Shi'ite political organization.

There has been strong support and sympathy for Israel from Western governments and many citizens over the Hamas raids, but the Israeli response has also prompted anger, particularly in Arab and other Muslim countries.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), quoting data from the Palestinian public works and housing department, said Israeli attacks had destroyed more than 41,000 housing units and damaged more than 222,000 housing units. In all, it said at least 45 per cent of Gaza’s housing units had reportedly been damaged or destroyed.

Over a four-day truce period, Israel and Hamas have agreed to swap 50 hostages held by the Palestinian militant group for 150 prisoners in Israeli jails.

It is the first halt in the conflict since Hamas fighters rampaged through southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.
