Story

STORY: Thousands of supporters of Pakistan’s ruling coalition demonstrated outside the top court in capital Islamabad alleging it being soft to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in its decisions on Monday (May 15).

Khan was arrested by the country's anti-graft agency last week, prompting violent protests across the country. Several people were killed in incident of vandalism, destruction and burning of infrastructure that had taken place across Pakistan following Khan’s arrest.

He was later released and received bail from a court in Islamabad for two weeks.

Chief of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) which had organized the protest outside Supreme Court of Pakistan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the double standard of justice was not acceptable to the people of Pakistan. He asked the Chief Justice not to support an individual.

“Umar Atta Bandyal sahib, we know you and respect you. But you are not allowed to disrespect the parliament from the chairs you and your colleagues are sitting in. Neither are you allowed to disrespect people nor the politicians,”he told the crowd of supporters.

He said he believed in the supremacy of the law and the constitution in the country.

Rehman said all institutions should work within the framework of law and the Constitution.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial faces criticism by members of the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led ruling coalition.
