STORY: The Vice President of the International Federation of Red Crescent Societies and the President of the Turkish Red Crescent Society, Karim Kinik, arrived in Kabul on Friday (February 04), to have a closer look at the plight of Afghans.
The head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, Mati ul Haq Khalis, who was at Kabul airport to welcome Karim, said the Afghan people were in dire need of help.
“He (President of the Turkish Red Crescent Society) is here. The main purpose of the trip is to get a closer look at what Afghans need and how Turkey and the International Committee of the Red Cross can help our people,” Khalis told reporters.
Karim said many Afghans go abroad in search of livelihood because there are no opportunities at home.
“You also know, many Afghans go to Europe. Those roads are very difficult, many people are killed in those smuggling routes. So we have to provide a better life for them here, As human beings and Muslims we will try to provide a better life for them here, and that is why I have come here,” he said.
He said they had collected donations which will soon reach to Kabul by train.
During his three-days’ visit, Karim Kinik will also meet with the Afghan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
The World Food Programme (WFP) and other concerned organizations have warned of an impending disaster of cold and hunger for millions of Afghans.
WFP has reported that an estimated 98 per cent of Afghans are not eating enough, with seven in 10 families resorting to borrowing to buy food.
