STORY: : Pakistanis will never bow down and stand with their armed forces in case of any attack by India, an Islamic cleric told a news conference in the biggest city Karachi on Wednesday (February 20).

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi has said he was giving Indian soldiers a "free hand" in the wake of the Pulwama attack.

A suicide bombing on Thursday (February 14) killed 40 Indian police in Pulwama in Indian held Kashmir in an attack claimed by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group.

Pakistan denied any involvement in the attack and called for United Nations intervention.

The incident stoked tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors over the killing in the disputed Himalayan region.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has said his country will retaliate if India attacks. Khan went on television to call on India to provide evidence to support its claims that Pakistan was involved.

The Islamic clerics said the whole nation was united and it would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its armed forces in case of any aggression by India.

"Modi! if you think it can benefit you then come and try interlocking fingers with us. Muslims can neither lean back nor bow down,"Allama Saeed Ahmed As'ad told reporters.

"In case of war, Imran Khan will be our prime minister and General Qamar Javed Bajwa our chief. If the General gives us order, we will come out alongwith the whole nation,"he added.

Analysts say Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, facing a general election by May, has come under pressure to use revenge slogan to lure more vote.

"India is making mischief these days only to gain vote because they are habitual of doing this whenever an election nears. It (India) instigates religious sentiments of Hindus to bag votes,"said As'ad.

India and Pakistan both claim the divided territory of Kashmir in its entirety. Rebels in the  Indian occupied side of the valley have been fighting Indian control since 1989.
