    STORY: Imran Ali, a Pakistani man, convicted in the rape and murder case of a 7-year-old girl Zainab in January, was hanged to death at Kot Lakhpat jail in the eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday (October 17).

    

    Imran Ali was convicted for the rape and murder of the minor girl in the city of Kasur, some 50 km from Lahore earlier this year.

    

    Ali was executed in the presence of both Magistrate Adil Sarwar and the girl's father. The girl's uncle was also present at the jail, local media reported. His appeals against the verdict failed and earlier this month President Arif Alvi rejected a plea for clemency.

    

    Television footage showed an ambulance arriving at the scene carrying a brother of the convict as well as two of his friends. After the execution, Ali's family took his body to Kasur.

    

    On 23 January, 24-year-old Imran Ali was arrested though a DNA match. He was sentenced to death in February for Zainab's rape and murder. After he was sentenced to death for raping and murdering Zainab, Imran Ali was convicted for similar crimes against six more girls.

    

    The incident triggered nation-wide street protests in Pakistan with people demanding a harsh punishment for the accused. Violent protests in Kasur city following her murder claimed two lives.

    

    Talking to the media after the execution, father of Zainab Amin Ansari regretted that the authorities did not allow to shows the hanging publicly.

    

    "We had appealed for a public hanging, thinking that it would leave a good impact on society. It could be a warning for other people. But, anyway, the media, electronic media has highlighted it enough which has raised awareness among children and families,"Ansari told reporters outside Kot Lakhpat prison.

    

    A two-member Lahore High Court bench comprising Justice Sardar Shamim Ahmed and Justice Shahbaz Rizvi on Tuesday dismissed the plea of the father of the minor girl, seeking public hanging of the convict.
