STORY:  At least one person was killed and seven others were injured when a four-storey residential building collapsed in Pakistan’s biggest city and commercial capital Karachi on Thursday (September 10), rescue officials and residents said.

There were fears more people might be trapped underneath the rubble of the building located at Korangi area of the city.

The injured, including two children, were shifted to a hospital.

A search and rescue operation was underway as rescuers and local residents cleared debris to find people underneath the debris of the fallen building.

The building was built on a 120 square yard on a land carved out of an amenity plot reserved for a playground.

According to the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), the building on the list of dangerous buildings

Local residents said five families lived in the building. Despite being asked to leave, two to three families were still living in the building at the time of the collapse.

“We came down here three days ago and got this whole building evacuated. Two of the building residents were not willing to evacuate the building whatever the conditions may be. The personnel from police station and the deputy commissioner’s team came down here and got this building evacuated. After two days they started (repair) work here and the whole building came down at around 12 or 1 p.m),”said a local political worker, Ahsan Ahmed.

“Four families were here. The government officials came down here checked the condition, and said it was okay. They did not even have it evacuated,”said local resident, Mohammad Shoaib.

Reportedly, the SBCA Director General Ashkar Dawar said the building was one of several illegally built on a plot allocated for a playground.

In March, a building collapsed in the Gulbahar area, killing 27 people and injuring at least 17 others.
